Aristotle And Machiavelli A Take On The Timeless...

Aristotle and Machiavelli: A Take on the Timeless Political Issue of Class Invoking his penchant for statistics and an eye for the common man, Senator Bernie Sanders spent his campaign highlighting disparity and inequality between one percenters and the average America. Time and time again, Sanders highlighted two facts: first, that the top one-tenth of the one percent holds as much wealth as the other 99.9% of Americans, and that during the recent economic downturn, most of the new income generated has gone back into the hands of Wall Street. The oncome polarity between these groups of Americans has never been this large, Sanders asserts. While one can agree or agree to disagree, the questions surrounding money, social strata, and the†¦show more content†¦It was under these circumstances that he not only witnessed, but also experienced that inspired his writing. The Prince contains many rules, themes, and historical anecdotes one must be aware of to be the Machiavellian prince one of the most important being the idea of relationship between the fe w vs. many, the oppressor vs. the oppressed, the Greats vs the People, and other relationships within a society. In chapter IX, Machiavelli argues that oppression as a means for gaining power is the many desire of the power-hungry individual. While no one wishes to be oppressed, man is simply incapable of doing unto others as one would want unto himself. In other words, men will always put down those who are weaker and oppress the less powerful. Machiavelli then attempts to deconstruct the conflict posing two key questions to be answered: Why are those who are already in a position of power, the Greats, so inclined to pick on the little guy? And furthermore, if this cannot be rectified, how does a society to the best of its ability protect the disenfranchised People from the Greats? Machiavelli suggests that the only remedy for the inevitable instability within societies is extreme order and consolidated power for efficiency. As previously discussed, this may mean that principles such as justice and fairness may need to take the backseat, but all for the greater good according to Machiavelli. The desire to oppress, he argues is natural

These are analyzed and stored by using the following flow in the†¦show more content†¦The third phase is the learning phase where in the data is fetched from the data store and then forwarded for further analysis to the machine learning block. The machine learning block uses the random forest algorithm to analyze the data that is being fetched by the learning agent after which it analysis report is sent back where in it is used to create the diagnosis function which is the required output The above figure shows the UML diagram; our project contains six major classes namely Node, FaultInjector, PingMap, MonitorAgent, LearningAgent and MachineLearningBlock. The MachineLearningBlock class is sub-class to the LearningAgent class. This handles all the functions from injecting faults, requesting for the TCP statistics, and analysis by the machine learning block. The above sequence diagram shows how the monitoring agent interacts through the steps stated above, we can see that initially the monitoring agent sends a signal to the ping map to deploy the monitoring agent into the selected nodes, then the fault injector injects random faults into the nodes containing the monitoring agent and then the monitoring agent request for the TCP statistics of these inject nodes and then the node replies with the TCP statistics and later on these statistics are stored in a log file and stored into the data-store.Show MoreRelatedLiterary Analysis: The Fault in Our Stars Essay738 Words   |  3 Pagesï » ¿(Student Name) Mrs. Heroux World Literature Honors 19 February 2014 The Fault in Our Stars Literary Analysis The Fault in Our Stars can be interpreted to have many hidden meanings. Night World Spellbinder Chapter 9 Free Essays

I he shoe was so incongruous that for an instant Thea thought her eyes must be playing tricks on her. It was the atmosphere here-the dim, echoing room with all its macabre booths. If she looked away and then looked back†¦ It was still there. We will write a custom essay sample on Night World : Spellbinder Chapter 9 or any similar topic only for you Order Now I should wait, I should call somebody. This could be something terrible. There are human authorities; I should at least wait for Eric†¦. Thea found herself moving in dreamlike, slow speed. She took the edge of the oilcloth between finger and thumb and lifted it just an inch or so. There was a leg attached to the shoe. A blue-jeaned leg. Not part of a dummy. And another shoe. Horror and adrenaline washed over Thea. And, strangely, that helped. Her first thought was. It’s a person and she may be hurt. She went into emergency mode, slamming a wall between herself and her fear. Hang on, are you okay, just let me see†¦ She pulled the rest of the oilcloth off, tugging to get it free. She saw legs, a body, curled fingers clutching the sleeve of a black-dressed witch dummy†¦ Then she saw the head and she reeled backward, both hands pressed over her mouth. She’d only gotten a glimpse, but the picture was burned into her mind. Blue-gray face, hideously swollen. Grotesquely bulging eyes. Tongue like a sausage protruding from between black lips†¦ Thea’s knees gave out. She’d seen the dead before. She’d been to leave-taking ceremonies where the mortal remains of witches were returned to the earth. But those had been natural deaths, and the corpses had been peaceful. While this†¦ I think it was a boy. It had short hair and a flat chest. But there was no way to recognize the face. It was so distorted-didn’t even look human†¦. He died violently. May his spirit be released; not held here by the need for revenge. Oh, Sekhmet, lion-headed goddess of Egypt; Mistress of Death, Opener of Ways, Sekhmet Who Reduceth to Silence†¦ Her disjointed thoughts were interrupted as sunlight fanned into the room. At the door, Eric shouted, â€Å"I’m back!† Thea stood up. Her legs wanted to cave again. She opened her mouth, but what came out was a whisper. â€Å"Eric-â€Å" He was hurrying toward her. â€Å"What’s wrong? Thea?† â€Å"It’s somebody dead.† She saw his eyes widen in absolute disbelief-and then he looked past her. He took a step toward the thing on the floor, stopped, crouched, and stared for a second. Then he whirled back and grabbed her as if he could somehow protect her from what he’d seen. â€Å"Don’t look at it; don’t look over there,† he gasped. â€Å"Oh, God, it’s bad.† * â€Å"I know. I saw it.† â€Å"It’s bad; it’s so bad†¦.† They were both holding on to each other. It was the only safety in this nightmare. â€Å"He’s dead. That guy is dead,† Eric said. It was obvious, but Thea understood the need to babble. â€Å"There’s nothing we can do for him. Oh, God, Thea, I think it’s Kevin Imamura.† â€Å"Kevin?† Black dots danced in front of Thea’s eyes. â€Å"No, it can’t be-â€Å" â€Å"I’ve seen him wearing that shirt before. And the hair†¦ And he’s on the committee to decorate this place. He must have been setting up that dummy.† Thea’s mind showed her a terrible picture. A crusted dark line on that bloated face-like the wound made by a slashing razor. And the soft black hair†¦ Yes, it could have been Kevin. And that meant- Blaise. â€Å"Come on,† Eric was saying, his voice dazed and quenched. â€Å"We’ve got to tell the office.† Numbly, Thea let him guide her. Her mind was in another place. Blaise. Did Blaise know†¦ could Blaise have†¦ She didn’t want to form the thought even to herself, but she couldn’t help it. †¦ finally gone all the way? Not just spilled blood, but taken a life? It was forbidden to witches. But the Harmans were part lamia, and vampires sometimes killed for power. Could Blaise have gone that far into the darkness? After they got to the office, things happened fast, but Thea couldn’t really take it in. Activity whirled around her. The secretaries. The principal. The police. She was grateful for Eric, who kept telling the story over and over so she didn’t have to. I need to find Blaise. They were back at the gym. The police were cordoning off the whole building with yellow tape. A throng of students and teachers was watching. Thea’s eyes skimmed the crowd, but she didn’t see Blaise anywhere. Voices rose around her. â€Å"I heard it was Kevin Imamura.† â€Å"Somebody said that guy from the dance came back and got him.† â€Å"Eric! Eric, did you really see him?† Then one voice outshouted the others. â€Å"Hey, Mrs. Cheng, what about the Halloween party? Is the gym gonna be open by then?† The principal, who had been huddled with a couple of police officers, turned around. Black hair riffling over her forehead in the breeze, she addressed the entire crowd. â€Å"I don’t know what is going to happen with the gym. There’s been a tragedy, and now there’s going to be an investigation. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes of that. Now, I want everybody to go back to their classes. Teachers, please take your students back to your classrooms.† â€Å"I can’t go back,† Thea whispered. She and Eric were standing at a little distance from the thinning crowd. Everyone seemed to have forgotten about them. â€Å"I’ll take you home,† Eric said immediately. â€Å"No-I need to find Blaise. I have some things to ask her.† She tried to make her stupefied brain work. â€Å"Eric, I should have told you this before. You’ve got to be careful.† â€Å"Of what?† â€Å"Of Blaise.† He looked incredulous. â€Å"Thea†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He glanced at the old gym. â€Å"You can’t think she had anything to do with-what happened to Kevin.† â€Å"I don’t know. She could have had somebody do it-or made him do it himself.† Thea kept her voice low. She looked straight into Eric’s face, willing him to believe her. â€Å"Eric, I know you don’t understand, but it’s like I told you before. She’s like Aphrodite. Or Medea. She laughs when she destroys things. Especially when she gets mad†¦ and she’s mad at you.† â€Å"Why?† â€Å"Because you picked me instead of her-because I like you-lots of things. That doesn’t matter. The point is that she may come after you. She may try to†¦ seduce you. And†-Thea glanced at the bobbing yellow tape surrounding the old gym-â€Å"she may try to hurt you. So will you just be careful if you see her? Will you promise me that?† Eric looked windblown and bewildered, but he nodded slowly. â€Å"I promise.† â€Å"Then I’ll see you later. We still have things to talk about-but I have to find Blaise first.† She walked toward the crowd, leaving Eric standing there in the wind. She knew he was watching her. . A waving hand caught Thea’s eye. It was Dani, her face full of sympathy and concern. â€Å"Thea, are you all right?† â€Å"Sort of.† Thea gave a laugh she didn’t recognize. â€Å"Have you seen Blaise around?† Dani’s soft little hand crept into hers. â€Å"She and Vivienne went home-I mean, to your place. I’ll go back with you, if you want. You shouldn’t be alone.† Thea squeezed her hand. â€Å"Thanks. I’d appreciate it.† She was grateful-and relieved that Dani didn’t hate her. â€Å"Dani-about the way I acted earlier†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Forget it. I don’t know what I said, but I didn’t mean to make you mad.† She added gently, â€Å"Thea, are you really okay? Really? Because I don’t want to upset you more†¦.† â€Å"Why?† And then: â€Å"What, Dani?† â€Å"Your grandma’s sick. That’s why Blaise and Vivienne went home-Vivienne’s mom paged her. She’s a healer-Vivienne’s mom, I mean-and I think she’s taking your grandma to her house.† Thea was disturbed. Gran hadn’t moved to Las Vegas for the same reason other Night People did. Lamia and made vampires came because so many of the humans here were transients-the kind that wouldn’t be missed if they disappeared. Other witches came because of the power vortexes in the desert. But Gran had come because of the warm, dry climate. Her lungs had been bad since she was a kid. Please don’t let it be serious, Thea kept thinking as Dani drove her home. She felt as if her skin had been rubbed too thin all over her body. When they got to the shop, Gran was already gone. Tobias and Vivienne were downstairs. â€Å"Is she okay?† Thea asked. â€Å"Is it something bad?† â€Å"Not too bad,† Tobias said. â€Å"She just kept getting dizzy today, and then she had a coughing fit and couldn’t stop. She finally decided maybe she’d better get somebody to sing it out. So she called Ms. Morrigan.† Oh, great-chanting. Just what Gran loved. But she must have been really sick to ask to have it done. â€Å"Can I call her?† â€Å"I wouldn’t,† Vivienne put in. Her green eyes were kind, her voice reassuring. â€Å"I’m sure Mom’s working on her by now, and when she does a singing, it takes all night. You shouldn’t disturb them. But don’t worry, Thea-my mom’s really good.† â€Å"Yes-it’s not that I’m worried about.† Thea looked around distractedly, finally coming back to Vivienne’s face. â€Å"Did you hear about what happened at school?† â€Å"No.† Vivienne looked mildly curious. â€Å"What happened?† Instead of answering, Thea said, â€Å"Where’s Blaise?† â€Å"Upstairs packing. She’s going to stay overnight at ray house. You can come, too-Thea?† Thea was already racing up the stairs. She burst into the bedroom she and Blaise shared. Blaise had a small suitcase open on her bed. Thea didn’t waste words. â€Å"Did you kill Kevin Imamura?† Blaise dropped a black silk teddy. â€Å"Did I what? What are you talking about?† â€Å"He’s dead.† â€Å"And you thought I did it? Thanks a lot, but it’s not him I want to kill.† Blaise narrowed her eyes and Thea felt cold. Then she tilted her head. â€Å"So how did he die?† â€Å"He was strangled. Somebody murdered him.† Blaise just raised her eyebrows and murmured, â€Å"Hm. I wonder where Randy is?† She held a shirt up, considered it, and added, â€Å"Do you want to come stay at Viv’s with me? It’s better than staying here by yourself.† â€Å"I don’t know. Do I have to watch you to make sure Eric doesn’t end up like Kevin?† Blaise gave her a scorching look. â€Å"When I go after a boy, I get him first. I don’t strangle him before the fun begins.† She slammed her suitcase closed and stalked out. Thea sat on the bed. In spite of her sharp words, Thea now knew Blaise hadn’t done it. Her cousin had been genuinely surprised. And Randy? I suppose it could have been, if he somehow got out of wherever they’ve taken him. He had a reason to hate Kevin. But†¦ The alternate explanation slid into place so quickly that Thea realized it must have been in her mind all along. The spirit. She sat there for an endless time, trying to think. It was like trying to find her way through a thick fog. Gran’s gone†¦ and if she’s sick I can’t bother her anyway†¦ of course, Blaise won’t help†¦ but I need to trust somebody†¦. Dani gently pushed the door open. â€Å"Can I come in?† When Thea nodded, she walked in and sat down on Blaise’s bed. â€Å"They left. I told Tobias to go too-he had a girlfriend he wanted to see. I’ll stay here tonight, if you want.† Thea took a shaky breath. â€Å"Thanks, Dani.† â€Å"Look, Thea, I don’t want to pry, but†¦ are you okay? I mean, you’re as pale as a corpse-† Dani bit her lip. â€Å"Sorry, bad choice of words. But I am your friend, and if there’s anything I can do, I’d like to help.† Another breath. Then Thea made her decision. â€Å"I worked a forbidden spell.† Dani looked shocked, but not appalled. â€Å"Which one?† â€Å"Calling back the spirits.† When Dani didn’t scream or faint, Thea told the whole story. All about her summoning-everything except why she’d been doing it. â€Å"And now I’m scared,† she finished. â€Å"I let something out yesterday, and today Kevin gets murdered. Blaise didn’t kill him. She thinks Randy may be involved, but†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Thea shook her head. â€Å"But, Thea, be logical. Why should it have anything to do with your spell?† Dani’s rational voice was soothing. â€Å"You let someone out, not something. The elders summon the ancestors all the time without anything bad happening. You just feel guilty because you know you weren’t supposed to be doing it.† â€Å"No. Dani, I can’t explain it, but the thing I let out-it wasn’t friendly. It knocked Blaise and me down. None of the spirits I saw the elders summon ever did that.† â€Å"Well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Dani looked doubtful. â€Å"But why would one of the ancestors went to murder a human?† â€Å"I don’t know.† Somehow talking about it had cleared Thea’s mind. She said slowly, â€Å"But†¦ maybe the book would tell us.† Ten minutes later, they were sitting side by side on Thea’s bed, with the iron chest on the floor and the book between them. â€Å"First, could you tell anything about the amulet that fell in the fire?† Dani asked in scientific tones. â€Å"Like, if the hair was gray, it could mean-â€Å" â€Å"The witch was old.† Thea caught on immediately. â€Å"No, it wasn’t gray or white. It was dark-sort of like mahogany.† She closed her eyes, trying to remember. â€Å"It all happened so fast-but I think it was long. It was doubled up lots of times in the clay.† â€Å"So maybe a woman.† â€Å"Yes.† Thea read for several minutes. â€Å"Wait a minute. Look at this.† † ‘Suzanne Blanchet,’ † Dani read with difficulty. † ‘Bom sixteen thirty-four in Esgavans on the day that they made bonfires for the peace between France and Spain. Tried sixteen fifty-three at Ron-chain, prisoner at the court of Rieux.’ â€Å" â€Å"And listen to the charges,† Thea said grimly. † ‘Bewitching men’s corn, killing cattle, bringing hunger into the country, and strangling babies at night with her long hair.’ â€Å" â€Å"Strangling,† Dani breathed. â€Å"She denied it, so they tortured her. Listen: ‘Being a little stretched on the rack, she screamed ceaselessly that she was not a witch, but being more tightly stretched, said that it was true.’ â€Å" â€Å"And then they tortured her family,† Dani said, her finger skimming the lines. â€Å"Oh, Isis, look at this. She had a ten-year-old brother named Clement and a six-year-old sister named Lucienne. They tortured them both.† â€Å"And burned them.† Thea had begun to tremble involuntarily. The room wasn’t cold, but she had a feeling like ice deep inside her. â€Å"Look. ‘The children having been promised the mercy of being strangled before burning, but the executioner not having been paid, they were committed alive to the flames†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢.† She couldn’t finish. † ‘†¦ before the eyes of their sister,’ † Dani whispered. She was shaking, too, and huddling close to Thea. â€Å"How could they do that?† â€Å"I don’t know,† Thea said flatly. â€Å"I mean, no wonder Night World laws are so strict. No wonder we have to keep ourselves a secret-look at what they do to us when they find out.† | Thea swallowed-she didn’t want to think about Night World rules. â€Å"And then they burned Suzanne,† she said quietly, keeping her eyes on the book. † ‘Being consigned to the fire, she uttered several exclamations, crying out upon revenge.’ â€Å" â€Å"I would too,† Dani said, her soft voice threaded with steel. â€Å"I’d come back and kill them.† She stopped and she and Thea looked at each other. â€Å"And maybe that’s just what she did,† Thea said slowly. â€Å"Only she couldn’t get to her torturers. But she found something that looked similar-a reproduction torture chamber. And there was Kevin, doing something to a witch dummy-hanging it, maybe. Maybe treating it in some way that reminded her of†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Thea nodded toward the book. â€Å"Anyway, doing something that made her lose it.† â€Å"And kill him. By strangling him-what she’d been accused of doing. Thea?† Dani grimaced, then went on. â€Å"When you saw Kevin’s body-was there anything around his neck?† Thea stared at the window curtains, trying to remember. That awful bloated face†¦ the protruding tongue†¦ and dark bruises on the throat. â€Å"No,† she said softly. â€Å"There were marks-but whatever strangled him was gone.† â€Å"She took it with her.† Dani shivered, then put both hands on the book. â€Å"Or maybe not. Look, Thea, this may make a great bonfire story, but, really, it’s all speculation.† Thea was staring at the yellowed page beneath Dani’s fingers. â€Å"I don’t think so,† she said quietly. â€Å"See this symbol by Suzanne Blanchet’s name? I recognize it. I saw it for just a second-on the amulet in the fire.† â€Å"You’re sure?† Thea looked away. â€Å"Yeah. It’s her, Dani. And it’s my fault. I let her out†¦ and now she’s killing people. Because of me, somebody’s dead.† It was only when she said it that the full realization hit-as if forming the words had somehow made it true. Kevin was dead. He wasn’t going to school anymore, he wasn’t going to get a chance to repair his Porsche. He wouldn’t ever smile at a girl again. He’d lost everything a person had to lose. â€Å"And I just-I just feel so bad,† Thea said. The ache in her throat rose up in a sort of spasm, as if she were going to be sick. But what came out was tears. Dani held her while she sobbed. And at last, when Thea was crying more quietly, she said, â€Å"You didn’t know. You didn’t mean to do anything bad. You were just playing around and it went wrong. You didn’t know.† â€Å"It doesn’t matter.† Thea wiped her face on her sleeve, sitting up. The ache in her chest was duller now, and she was slowly realizing that something else was there, something that felt hot and bright. A need to act. â€Å"It doesn’t matter,† she said again. â€Å"I still made it happen. But I’ll tell you one thing-I’m not going to let it keep happening. I’ve got to stop her. Which means I’ve got to send her back.† â€Å"I’m with you there,† Dani said, her small jaw set in determination. â€Å"But how?† Thea stared at the wall a moment, then said, â€Å"I have an idea.† How to cite Night World : Spellbinder Chapter 9, Essay examples

Neoclassicism vs Rococo Art Periods Essay Example For Students

Neoclassicism vs Rococo Art Periods Essay Over the years, works of art have developed and varied greatly across genres and time periods. From the cave paintings of the Paleolithic era to the abstract expressionism and Pop Art of the 21st century, we have seen styles of art evolve and develop. These styles and periods of art sometimes reflect past artists and styles and other times introduce an era of completely new art genres and styles. Two different art periods that succeeded each other is rococo and neoclassicism. Rococo is a style of art that began in the early to mid-18th century and was closely followed by the neoclassical art movement. Rococo art originated in France in the early 18th century and was itself an evolution of the earlier style of baroque art. Rococo art emphasized elaborate, detailed, and ornamental elements in sculpture and architecture, and more realistic representations in paintings. Coming off the era of baroque art, which was very much influenced by religion and endorsed by the Catholic Church, rococo art thrived in a time where secularism was becoming a more dominant theme in social attitudes. This Age of Enlightenment saw a shift toward loosened morals and a light-heartedness in the social climate that was, in turn, reflected in the art of that time period. Some characteristics of Rococo art is light, airy colors and delicate, curling themes. In fact, the root word for rococo comes from the French word â€Å"rocaille† meaning â€Å"shell work† (MindEdge, 3.16). The subjects of Rococo art were usually people depicted in a light-hearted manner and frequently contained themes of indi rect eroticism, or elements of love and romance, such as cherubs. Following this art period, a new art movement emerged: Neoclassicism. In contrast to the way rococo art developed, basically as an evolution of the style before it, neoclassicism was a totally new and different era. Neoclassicism saw a revival of classical styles and influence from ancient Greek and Roman art, architecture, theatre, and literature (MindEdge, 3.17 ). This neoclassicism art movement borrowed many elements and themes, not only from earlier societies, but also from earlier art periods such as the Renaissance. The social climate during this time was much more somber and realistic. Coming off the American and French revolution, artists shifted their attitudes toward art from light and airy themes and colors to a more serious dark tone with a move toward political themes and subjects. Neoclassical artists used a lot of sharp colors, employed techniques such as chiaroscuro, which contrasts light and dark shading to achieve the illusion of depth (MindEdge, 3.17), and generall y depicted realistic characters in bold colors against dark backdrops. There are more differences than similarities between these two art periods. In the same way that rococo art sought to do away with the baroque paintings and their religious themes of saints, the divine, and religious iconography by focusing on fantasy and the pleasures of life, the neoclassical artists tried to distance themselves from the detached characteristics of rococo art. As a result, the two main elements that shaped neoclassicism turned out to be wistfulness and the romantic sentiments of discarding the current social problems. These factors resulted in the striking differences between these two styles of art. An example of the differences in artwork styles is seen when comparing the rococo work of art The Swing by Jean-Honorà © Fragonard, and the Neoclassical masterpiece Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David. The Swing features delicate, coiling tree branches, many curves evident in the ruffles and lace on the subject’s dress, and the techniques of light and shadows. The subject matter is also typical of rococo art and depicts a woman allowing her concealed lover a peek under her dress as her husband stands oblivious in the background. All those characteristics, the techniques, colors, and subject matter are visual trademarks of the rococo style. .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .postImageUrl , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:hover , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:visited , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:active { border:0!important; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:active , .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub115ada8c8e2a186678661be4bc35f7c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: APAH Chapter 19 Early Renaissance Art VocabularyIn contrast, Oath of the Horatii presents the subjects in a much more realistic manner using dark shadows and bold colors in the foreground. The subjects in this painting are just as divergent as the style and techniques of the two artworks. Depicted in this painting are three brothers taking their swords from their father, and in doing so, making an oath to defend Rome demonstrating civic loyalty and self-sacrifice (MindEdge, 3.18). The political theme in this painting exemplifies the characteristics of neoclassical art and is a classic demonstration of the shift in social attitudes during that period. The nature of the two paintings, including the characters portrayed and the stories they tell, could not be more different, yet they provide a striking example of the shift from the prevalent rococo art toward neoclassicism, as well as, the social attitudes that accompanied it. Neoclassicism went on as the leading art movement and preceded romanticism, which was yet another shift away from the classically inspired art styles and an early 19th century response to the restraints of neoclassicism (MindEdge, 3.18). Regardless, we still see the effects of neoclassical influence around us in modern times. Such American landmarks as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the  American Museum of Natural History’s Roosevelt Memorial are manifestations of lingering neoclassical style in our world today. In the 21st century neoclassicism has also seen somewhat of a revival with some public buildings in the United States being built in the neoclassical style as recent as 2006, for example, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee (â€Å"Art 101†, 2011). In conclusion, we can see that many of the successive styles of art were either a continuation or modification of an earlier style, or an attempt to break away and create a completely new era of artistic styles that more accurately reflect, not only the artists personal styles, but also the social context of that specific period in time.

So, there are merely a few topographic points that have entree to rivers and of class it does nt full make full the demand of all people in such immense state. Furthermore, developing and spread outing the metropoliss in the resent decennaries caused nil but deforestation. Therefore, it seems hard to happen topographic points to be relaxed for those who are willing to forestall their wellness or either maintains it. Finally, since Iran is an Muslim state it is impossible to hold sand, Sun, sea and massage and all local intervention at the same clip for all household members or friends who are interested to hold a remainder on the beach and be relaxed without any job and intervention. After about one twelvemonth due to a good repute of this company and accomplishing some successes in acting of several seminars they were offered the 2nd inn every bit good as the first blast house for instructors and professors who were coming to Kish University to learn daily. At the same clip Rana Kish decided to spread out its activities into touristry services easy. However, as a little and new company they had no pick but to present themselves step by measure. In add-on, they decided to go familiar with all failings and chances in touristry services on Kish Island by undergoing of duties of other large and celebrated travel bureaus who were directing riders to Kish. In fact, they arranged paths and took riders to all attractive forces. Since, all the directors in this company had passed many different classs in touristry and even some of them every bit good as some employees had Tourism grades it was a great success to do happy all the bureaus and riders who were going on Kish. Hence, they achieved the first end which was being celebrated and obtaining a good repute in a little but one of the best tourer musca volitanss in Iran. Not long after, they decided to co-operate with some bureaus in chief land of Iran in footings of domestic Tourss in different parts of state. So, after about 6 old ages working hard in touristry industry of Iran they performed the following program in order to spread out their activities. In fact, based on their scheme it was the clip to work on surpassing groups of riders. In fact, in this article the reader will be informed about this thought in item. Company s Goal: As it is rather clear based on the Company s object and company s history, we can detect this company concerns more about touristry activities and they have been seeking to set more attempt on this. In fact, this company has a concluding end which is introduce all the attractive forces and sight sings in Iran to all over the universe in order to increase the income and portion of touristry industry by coming tourers. However, to acquire to this point this company has done tonss of activities and passed many stairss and still has to make. It is merely because the directors believe that the status in Iran in footings of civilization and attitude in non ready yet to accept and entertain foreign tourer. Hence, in this measure they choose Malaysia as one of the best good known tourer musca volitanss in the universe and besides one of the popular 1 in sense of entertain and regard to tourist. In fact, this company is intended to do people familiar with this great attitude indirectly and do them aware about all the strengths and benefits of coming tourer to one state. Culture: As it was mentioned earlier it is rather interesting and fortunate that in this company the directors have graduated in touristry and passed so many different classs in this industry from the basic one which can be the etiquette boulder clay professional linguistic communication in touristry. Hence, it is non hard to think how the civilization in this company would be. In fact, the directors have tried their best to do happy and satisfied the employees every bit good as clients or riders. In fact, they are cognizant that employees do non like to remain in the same place for a long clip and would be happy if they offer to go to in some categories related to their occupation to advance in their place in the company. So, all the employees in this company have been sent to different categories like etiquette in behaviour and amusement. In add-on, they have been asked to reassign all the thoughts and suggestions either from themselves or clients to the directors. Furthermore, the environment in this company has planned in such a manner that the riders and blasts to be relaxed and experience welcome by regard, to be secured, entertain, back uping them one time they have jobs and presenting them all the topographic points they would wish to travel and see candidly and honestly. Company s strengths and failings: Rana Kish Co. has been sing to cognize and analyses all the strengths every bit good as failings in order to happen and take chances every bit much as possible and besides to acquire rid of failings. Harmonizing to the brief history there are some strengths in this company. First of all, educated staffs in touristry industry who help the company to accomplish its end easier and sooner than the 1 who does non hold. Second, get down working in Malaysia as a Muslim and non really expensive state ( compare to currency of Iran ) an besides based on a good political relationship between these two states while working, there is this chance to present Iran as a Muslim and beautiful state to Malaysia people. Furthermore, Rana Kish was able to be success On Kish Island as a first phase and obtained a good repute at that topographic point. Furthermore, this company was the lone company on Kish Island who offered different bundles for different gustatory sensati on and mark of going. On the other manus, there are some failings in this company. First, get down working in Malaysia for a long clip needs some conditions. For case it seems they need to hold an office, coachs, employees and some relationships with some topographic points and some people. Besides that, due to the latest boycotts of Iran in the universe it is predicted that Malayan people do non hold a good background about Persian people. Besides, this company will hold the job of reassigning money to Malaysia due to the boycott and it makes a serious trouble for Rana Kish to pay hard currency to hotel and whoever is making a occupation for them. Apart from all these trouble, Persian people do non hold any information about health touristry and it takes clip and more money to publicize and inform people about this sort of tour bundle. Furthermore, the company is cognizant that, get down working in a foreign state and taking exceptional people ( wellness tourers ) would be a small spot hard for a first c lip even for a short clip because they do non hold a experience of managing a circuit in other state. The health and clients satisfaction is one of the primary and of import concerns of Rana Kish Co, which will offer travel to comparatively undisturbed countries. It means this company manages to take this group of people to a peaceable topographic points where has non been affected by alterations that have happened in other topographic points. The company is cognizant that most of the clients of this bundle have some jobs in their organic structures and need to more consideration during the flight, hostelling every bit good as intervention so the bureau and its forces aimed to set more attempts to increase their attending to clients. The travel bureau and its director will try to place a resort with a certain capacity and will guarantee that its bundles will non transcend that capacity. The mark market is upper income group of Persian people in age of 40 and above who would wish to be relaxed, have a remainder far from any distressing noises, to be safe every bit good as those who are looking for a manner to maintain and forestall their wellness and besides those who would wish to keep their organic structures and even mental wellness by a short trip to Malaysia. This group of people would be interested to remain in the resorts that are about ever located in stupefying natural environments or in the trendiest metropolis territories and would be willing to bask a vacation in natural milieus such that nature is non harmed. The strengths of this bundle are that there is a new found consciousness of demand for healthy life styles every bit good as Willingness of patients to go for attention. The strong points would include Tourism affecting travel to countries of natural or ecological involvement, typically under the counsel of a naturalist, for the intent of loosen upi ng via detecting wildlife and larning about the environment. The failings of these bundles may be that the travellers will non acquire the comfort during the about 8 hr winging and besides about little graduated table of operations in wellness ( due chiefly to size of populations ) limits scope of services available on the some countries such as islands. Furthermore, medical insurance portability. The merchandising points will be: Making one feel happy, healthier, fitter and more relaxed. On the other manus there are several benefit for host state such as foreign exchange, a decrease in the demand for public resources, consumer additions, and better direction. Addition of environmental A ; cultural cognition Our confederates will be: The bundle would be offered at a price reduction to those companies or travel bureaus who are connected to wellness and travel at an attractive price reduction. The turning focal point on wellness and wellbeing has led to wellness and spa touristry get downing to emerge as a thriving section in the 1990s across Europe, Asia, and North America. The decennary was marked by significant investing in new resort and hotel watering place and the renovation and ascent of bing watering place installations. Finish watering place and medical watering place are the two classs most widely associated with wellness and health programmes. These types of installations offer visitors the chance to take the Waterss of watering places know for their wellness and health belongingss, medical services, fitness programmes and resort comfortss. Mueller and Kaufmann ( 2000 ) have defined wellness touristry as the amount of all the relationships and phenomena ensuing from a journey and abode by people whose chief motivation is to continue or advance their wellness. They stay in a specialised hotel which provides the appropriate professional know-how and single attention. Furthermore they require a comprehensive service bundle including physical fittingness ( physical exercisings ) /beauty attention, healthy nutrition/diet, relaxation/meditation and mental activity/education. The selling of services dependent much on mutuality of Marketing, Operations, and Human Resources. The differences between touristry selling and other services are, ( 1 ) principal merchandises provided by recreation/tourism concerns are recreational experiences and cordial reception, ( 2 ) Alternatively of traveling merchandise to the client, the client must go to the merchandise ( area/community ) , ( 3 ) Travel is a important part of the clip and money spent in association with recreational and touristry experiences, ( 4 ) is a major factor in people s determinations on whether or non to see your concern or community. Congress Members Services to Constituents

Congress Members Services to Constituents While they may not always vote the way you think they should, the members of the U.S. Congress from your state or congressional district - Senators and Representatives can and will do some very useful things known as constituent services for you. While most can be requested or arranged for through your Senator’s or Representative’s website, these and other services can be requested in a  personal letter  or in a  face-to-face meeting  with your members of Congress.   Get a Flag Flown Over the Capitol U.S. flags that have actually been flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., can be ordered from all senators and representatives. Flags are available in sizes ranging from 3x5 to 5x8 and cost from about $17.00 to about $28.00. You can request a specific date, like a birthday or anniversary, on which you want your flag flown. Your flag will come with a presentation-quality certificate from the Architect of the Capitol certifying that your flag was flown over the Capitol. If you specify that the flag should be flown to commemorate a special event, the certificate will also note that event. The flags are of high quality, with embroidered stars and individually sewn stripes. Be sure to order your flag at least 4 weeks before the date you want it flown over the Capitol, and then allow about 4- to 6-weeks for delivery. Most, if not all members of Congress now provide online forms for ordering flags on their websites, but you can still order them by good old U.S. mail  if you prefer. Demand for flags tends to go up around special occasions like July 4, national elections, or the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, so delivery might take a little longer. Get Nominated to a U.S. Military Service Academy Each U.S. senator and representative is permitted to nominate candidates for appointment to four U.S. service academies. These schools are the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. You can also get more information on service academy nominations by reading the CRS report Congressional Nominations to U.S. Service Academies (.pdf) Work as a Senate Page Generally open to 16- or 17-year-old high school juniors, the Senate Page Program allows students a unique opportunity to learn about Congress while continuing with their coursework. Page responsibilities center on their work assisting Senators in the Senate Chamber when Congress is in session. The program is one of the most selective and prestigious in the United States. Each Senator may sponsor interested high school students, who then compete for a limited number of positions. Win the Congressional App Challenge The offices of U.S. Representatives in participating House districts can help K-12 students compete in the annual Congressional App Challenge. Students design and submit their own software application, individually or in groups of up to four. Winning apps may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, and additional prizes may be available. Win the Congressional High School Art Competition High school students from participating House districts are eligible for the annual Congressional Art Competition. The winning piece of visual artwork from each congressional district is displayed in the Capitol for a year. Since the program began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Plan Your Visit to Washington, D.C. Your members of Congress know their way around Washington, D.C., and they can help you enjoy a great visit. Many members will even help you book visits to D.C. landmarks like the White House, the Library of Congress and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. They can also direct you to tours you can book yourself including, the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and Washington Monument. Most members of Congress also provide web pages filled with information of importance to D.C. visitors including points of interest, airport and subway information, entertainment, and more. In addition, you can schedule a visit with your senator or representative, if they are in D.C. during your visit. Get Information on Grants Remembering that very few federal grants are available to individuals, your senators and representatives are well equipped to provide information on grants. They can help you or your organization with information on funding availability, grant eligibility, small business assistance, student loans, non-grant sources of federal aid and much more. Get a Special Greeting Card Last but far from least, you can request a very nice, personalized greeting card from your senator or representative commemorating special events like birthdays, anniversaries, graduations or other life achievements. Many members of Congress now provide online forms for ordering greetings and most allow you to order greetings by phone or fax. Help With a Federal Agency Helping citizens navigate the complex federal agency system is part of the job for U.S. Senators and Representatives. Their offices may be able to help if you are having trouble working with the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the IRS or any other federal agency.

Privacy and Internet Policy Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Privacy and Internet Policy - Research Paper Example Everybody person has the right to privacy of personal information which is private in nature. George Reynolds, in his book â€Å"Ethics in Information Technology,† argues that â€Å"Privacy is the right to be left alone – the most comprehensive of rights, and the right most valued by a free people† (Reynolds, 2010). People prefer to keep their private information secret because they do not want it to be misused by others. So they safeguard it with the help of laws as also with the help of software etc. The concept of consumer profiling is also relevant in this context. It deals with sketching of important psycho-graphical and demographical information concerning the user of a product. Such data consists of details like gender, age group, education, place of living, profession, income scale, marital status etc. Some companies explicitly gather personal information about the users of internet when they register at their websites by way of making them fill certain forms. The threat in this case is that personal data is collected and certain companies sell this information to other firms without the consent of consumers. Thus, the internet exposes individuals to the threat of leaking their private information. Therefore, protecting consumer data is a significant concern while using the internet for various purposes. Though all companies have a privacy statement, explicitly given on their websites, one cannot rule out the possibility that â€Å"existing privacy enhancing technologies fail in the event of a vendor operating against their stated privacy policy†. , leading to loss of customer privacy and security† (Pearce & Bertok, 1999, para. 1). Personal information transacted through online can be misused, which will lead to failure in safeguarding customer privacy. There are some laws to prevent the misuse of personal data, but these are not sufficient to fully safeguard privacy. Therefore, there is an urgent need to enhance or supplement the existing regulations to completely

Multistep reserach Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Multistep reserach - Research Paper Example At the same time, burning it pollutes the environment as well. The objective of this paper is to discuss various forms of transport and their impacts to the society. Transport is a primary contributor to the process of industrialization. It facilitates the movement of raw materials to manufacturers, and processed products to potential buyers. It also assists in the creation of employment opportunities, for instance, it employs drivers and pilots (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 90). Thus, enhances standards of living. Transport networks and mechanisms assist greatly during emergencies and natural calamities. They provide a means through which people and property can be moved from volatile to safer areas. Air transport involves the use of planes, choppers, and air balloons. It is the most efficient means of transport when it comes to business connectivity and efficiency. It is also reliable for leisure since it offers an aerial view for diverse views and is quite fast. Reliable air transportation facilitates international tourism and faster transportation of goods, particularly perishable goods, more than any other means. Thus, it is an important instrument for economic growth. It is a fundamental instrument of globalization. This is because, it has a high capacity for enhancing integration of political, economic, social and cultural activities at an international level. It is the most expensive mode of transport, and therefore, often reserved for affluent travelers (Daley 1). In the occurrence of natural calamities air transport is usually the most convenient mode of movement of goods and people. Air transport is often affected by adverse weather conditions and is quite uneconomical for short distance movement. In terms of security, air transport accidents are usually the harshest as it normally leads to massive damage of goods and loss of life.

Life History as a method os Social Research Essay

Life History as a method os Social Research - Essay Example Choosing a candidate for my life history interview was one of the toughest decisions. As I sat on my study desk wondering who could give me a valuable insight on a society that existed more than half a century ago, I was startled by the shrill ring of the phone. It was my childhood friend who was of Indian origin .he had called to invite me over to his house as it happened to be an Indian festival and his grandma had dished out a myriad of delicacies which he wanted me to try out. And that was the moment a brilliant idea crossed my head. His grandma! Nobody could be a better subject for my interview- a different country altogether with a plethora of varied cultures and all of them in stark contrast with our own! Before I knew I was at his doorstep with my stationary, Dictaphone and artillery of questions I had framed on my way. To my disappointment, the going was not destined to be smooth. My friend's grandma is a very shy and reserved lady and she felt a bit awkward and uncomfortabl e when I approached her with my request. To start with, she just couldn't comprehend as to why someone would want to interview her and believed that she had nothing worthy enough to talk about. She also looked quite intimidated by my Dictaphone and elaborate stationary. After an hour of persuasion, pleading and begging she consented but only if I promised to safeguard her anonymity. Therefore, hereon I am going to call her "Gran". After a "warm up" session of friendly chit- chat; she gradually opened up and let me into her life story. Today, for me she was not a friend's grandmother but a woman who represented her entire community and whose words and opinions I was probably going to generalize to a whole population. I read quite bit about the plight of woman in India during yesteryears and the oppression the faced, so I decided to probe her on the issue. Gran turned 70 this summer. She was born to an average marwadi Indian family in early 1940's and raised among two younger brothers. Her childhood saw the period when India and Pakistan were undergoing a partition. She did school till about fifth grade and then was forced to drop out because her parents could not afford to send three children to school and since they felt it was more important to educate a male child , she was the obvious choice for sacrifice. Girls were at that time never really considered a permanent member of the family since they married and moved out to their husbands house, thus investing on them in any way seemed to make no sense to parents. She however is self-educating herself out of her brother's textbooks whenever she could. "I simply loved math's, I think I would have made a good teacher!" she says with a glint in her eyes. She was barely into her teenage ( which was common in 1950's) when she was married to a guy she had never seen or known and within a day her life took drastic turn - a whole new family, an unfamiliar city, a stranger she was supposed to call "husband" and spend the rest of her life with! . It was not long before it dawned upon her that her in-laws had demanded a huge amount in cash and kind to accept her as their daughter -in -law. These demands kept increasing in frequency and outrageousness and her family had no choice but to oblige because a woman abandoned by her husband and her family ha

Theories on Stages of Sleep

Theories on Stages of Sleep Paul Stolt Jr In our textbook it says that, â€Å"REM sleep makes up the remaining 20 per cent of your sleep time. It is pronounced â€Å"rem† and stands for rapid eye movement sleep because your eyes move rapidly back and forth behind closed lids† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 153). The brain waves that are present in REM sleep are beta waves, which is the same kind that are present when a person is awake. Also, during this stage, the body is alert, but the muscles are paralyzed, thus prohibiting movement during this time. The REM sleep stage is the one that the process of having dreams occurs in. According to our text, a person passes through the REM sleep stage about five or six times a night. The intervals in between these stages are approximately half an hour to an hour and a half long. Most people are in the REM sleep stage for about half an hour to forty-five minutes, before they enter the NREM, or Non REM, sleep stage. An individual’s heart rate and blood pressure a re typically higher in REM, indicating a more alert state in this stage than in the non REM stage. Creative thinking processes are more present during REM sleep, probably due to a lack of activity in the areas of the brain that are responsible for critical thinking. Students need REM sleep in order to transfer the knowledge that they have stored throughout the day in short term memory, into long term memory. This stage helps to promote the encoding process, which is responsible for the transfer. Once the information is encoded during the REM stage, it becomes easier to recall at a later time for tests and exams. There is an indication in the human body of the need for REM sleep, because if someone has not spent enough time in this stage the previous night, the body will compensate by spending more time in REM the following night. The Alpha stage occurs right before people drift off to sleep. During this stage, people start to feel tired and relaxed, often just lying in bed with their eyes closed, and random thoughts, such as activities of the previous day, or the plans that they may have the following day, present in their thoughts. According to the text book, â€Å"Alpha waves have a low amplitude and high frequency, (8 to 12 cycles per second)† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 152). After the alpha stage, Non REM Sleep, or NREM for short, occurs. This stage is where most people spend 80 per cent of their time while sleeping. This type of sleep is divided into four stages, each stage being associated with unique brain wave patterns and biological responses (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014). In the first stage of Non REM sleep, there is a transition that occurs from being wide awake and alert, to drifting off to sleep. This stage usually lasts from about one to seven minutes long. The text says that this s tage is â€Å"marked by the presence of theta waves, which are lower in amplitude and lower in frequency (4 to 7 cycles per second) than alpha waves† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 152). Next, the person passes through the second stage of sleep. In the second stage, there are rapidly occurring periods of what researchers call sleep spindles. In this stage, physiological processes such as breathing, a person’s body temperature, and their heart rate slowly decrease, and they become harder to wake up. This stage is what most researchers define as a person being asleep. Next, after about half an hour to forty five minutes of falling asleep, the individual enters stages three and four of Non REM sleep. Delta waves are present in stage three, and these are defined as â€Å"large, slow brain waves, meaning they have very high amplitude and very low frequency† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 152). As the person moves on to stage four in Non REM sleep, they experience a significant increase in the presence of Delta waves. During this stage, biological processes such as heart rate, breathing, body temperature, and the flow of blood to the brain are dramatically decreased, and the body secretes a substance called GH, or growth hormone, which is responsible for controlling the metabolic rate in the body, physical growth in the body, and the development of the human brain. After this stage, the individual passes back through the second and third stages of Non REM, and enters into the dreaming, or REM, stage of sleep. The necessity of sleep for a living organism can be explained in two logical ways. The first is that the body repairs and restores itself while it is resting. In one theory, the human brain repairs and restores itself while sleeping. It has also been proven that chemicals that are harmful to our system are flushed out during the sleeping process. Some research has also suggested that the immune system is impaired because of sleep deprivation (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2013). The second way that it can be explained is the Conservation theory. This theory suggests that the need to conserve energy at night for the human race promoted the need for sleep. In other words, since it was dark out, and there was little light to be able to see, that time was better spent resting instead of moving about. It would seem that as an individual goes throughout their lifetime, the need for sleep is greatest during the early years, and less as they get older. When an infant is born, the average time that they spend asleep is about seventeen hours a day, with half of that time spent in REM sleep. Then, when they get a little older, such as approximately around four years old, they sleep about ten hours a day, with about 25 to 30 per cent of that time spent in REM sleep. A little later, around the teenage years, the amount of sleep that is required is about 9 hours per night, with the trend being later bed times, and the teenagers waking up later during the day. A couple years later, at about nineteen to twenty years of age, the amount of sleep required by the adolescents is about seven to eight hours per night, with twenty per cent of that time spent in REM. As an adult reaches the golden years, the amount of sleep required is six and a half hours per night, with approximately twenty per cent being spent in REM sleep. The text defines the circadian rhythm as a â€Å"biological clock that is genetically programmed to regulate physiological responses within a time period of twenty-four hours (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 150). The circadian clock is genetically set for about 24 hours 18 minutes. The clock is reset by the retinal cells, which act like sensors that let in sunlight, and send signals to the brain, resetting it by eighteen minutes each day. However, there are quite a few problems associated with the circadian clock by individuals who work midnight shifts or have to fly frequently for their job, thereby getting a condition known as jet lag. First, let’s discuss individuals that work the midnight shift. These individuals go against the natural instinct of their circadian clocks, resulting in decreased performance of their cognitive and motor skills. Also, people who change shifts a lot, such as working swing shift, cause a lot of physical stress in their bodies and psychological stress in their minds. Secondly, people with jet lag often experience problems with feeling tired all the time, difficulty in being able to concentrate on a particular task, and reduced ability in their ability to use logical thinking, reasoning, or remembering. It takes people with jet lag about a day per hour of difference between time zones to recover. However, there is hope. Charles Czeisler developed a new treatment called light therapy in 1994. This treatment uses artificial light to combat fatigue in both people who work the midnight shift, and those with jet lag. Next I would like to talk about the effects that sleep deprivation has on individuals. People with sleep deprivation run the risk of having impaired immune systems, with the potential for increased infections and diseases. They also experience increased stress levels, elevated blood pressure, and an increased build-up of plaque in the arteries, with a severe potential for heart attack or stroke. Other problems they experience include the risk of obesity and diabetes, difficulty in recognizing words, and doing ordinary math problems. They are more susceptible to increased irritability, and increased difficulty in making logical and rational decisions. Terms and Concepts Perceptual Threshold -The perceptual threshold is the smallest thing that can be perceived, or recognized, by the human senses. Sensation A sensation is a relatively meaningless piece of information, that results when the brain processes electrical signals that come from the sense organs. Stimulus A stimulus is any change of energy in the environment, such as light waves, sound waves, mechanical pressure, or chemicals. Structuralists Structuralists are psychologists who believed that we add together thousands of sensations to form a perception. Gestalt Psychologists Gestalt psychologists are psychologists that believe that our brains follow general rules that specify how individual elements are to be organized into a meaningful pattern, or perception. Depth Perception Depth Perception is the ability of the eye and brain to add a third dimension called depth to all visual perceptions, even though the images being projected might only be two dimensional in nature. Consciousness Consciousness describes different levels of awareness of one’s thoughts and feelings. Biological Clock The biological clock is an internal timing device that is genetically set to regulate various physiological responses for different periods of time. Stages of Sleep Stages of sleep refer to the distinctive changes in the electrical activity of the brain, and accompanying physiological responses to the body that occur as someone passes through different phases of sleep. Hypnosis Hypnosis is a procedure in which a researcher, clinician, or hypnotist suggests that a person will experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Stimulants Stimulants are chemical substances such as cocaine, amphetamines, caffeine, and nicotine that increase activity of the central nervous system and result in heightened alertness, arousal, euphoria, and decreased appetite. Opiates Opiates are chemical substances such as opium, morphine, and heroin that produce three predominant effects in the central nervous system: the reduction of pain, opiate euphoria, a pleasurable state between waking and sleeping; and constipation. Hallucinogens Hallucinogens are drugs that affect someone’s mind or behavior and have the ability to produce changes in perception, thought, emotion, and awareness. Classical Conditioning Classical Conditioning is a kind of learning in which a neutral stimulus acquires the ability to produce a response that was originally produced by a different stimulus. Operant Conditioning Operant Conditioning is a kind of learning in which the consequences that follow some behavior increase or decrease the likelihood of that behavior’s occurrence in the future. Cognitive Learning Cognitive Learning is a kind of learning that involves mental processes, such as attention and memory, may be learned through observation or imitation; and may not involve any external rewards or require the person to perform any observable behaviors. Generalization Generalization is the tendency for a stimulus that is similar to the original conditioned stimulus to elicit a response that is similar to the conditioned response. Discrimination Discrimination occurs when an organism learns to make a particular response to some stimuli but not to others. Extinction Extinction is a procedure in which a conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus, and, as a result, the conditioned stimulus no longer elicits the conditioned response Thorndike Thorndike was an American psychologist who lived during the 1800’s and formulated the law of effect, which stated that if some random actions are followed by a pleasurable consequence, such actions are strengthened and will likely occur in the future. Skinner Skinner was a psychologist who developed a theory known as the operant response during the 1930’s, which says that â€Å"An operant response is a response that can be modified by its consequences and is a meaningful unit of ongoing behavior that can be easily measured† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 214). Reinforcers Reinforcers are â€Å"consequences that occur after a desired behavior and increase the chances that the behavior will occur again† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 218). Punishment A punishment is a stimulus that â€Å"stops or decreases the occurrence of a behavior† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 219). Schedules of Reinforcement Schedules of Reinforcement are programs or rules that determine how and when the occurrence of a response will be followed by a reinforcer (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 220). Spontaneous Recovery Spontaneous Recovery refers to either a temporary recovery in the rate of responding in operant conditioning, or the temporary occurrence of the conditioned response in the presence of the conditioned stimulus in classical conditioning (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 222). Behavior Modification â€Å"is a treatment or therapy that changes or modifies problems or undesirable behaviors by using principles of learning based on operant conditioning, classical conditioning, and social cognitive learning† (Plotnik Kouyoudmjian, 2014, p. 232). artificial intelligence Essay -- essays research papers

Artificial intelligence or Al for short capability of a computer to perform functions that is normally associated with human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning or self-improvement. Its concept requests a lot more than present information to the user; it requires that the machine is not only able to store and manipulate information but also to deal with its "meaning". AI is what we call understanding, a combination of computer science, physiology and philosophy. The element that the fields of Al have in common is the creation of machines that can "think". In order to classify machines as "thinking", it is necessary to define intelligence. To what level does intelligence consist of, for example, solving complex problems, or making generalizations and rel...
